Having your high school disappear is an emotional event. For so many of us, these teenage years are the formative years – making us who we are – creating memories that will last all our lives. In the Charleston area alone, we recently said goodbye to Moultrie, Ft. Johnson and Chicora high schools. State-wide, the SC public school system has many examples of schools that closed due to population factors. Now, bulldozers stand ready to take away another iconic educational building in Charleston - Middleton High School. Scheduled to be demolished in the summer of 2027, the 2-story structure crashing down may be difficult for alumni to witness. Middleton ended in the year 2000, its facade stands as a reminder of our youth. Also gone is nearby St. Andrew’s Parish High School. The schools are tied together in location and history… they merged to form super-school, West Ashley High. This puts the two schools in the same position… fading away into the history books. How do the thousands of alumni feel? Are memories alone sufficient to sustain our legacy? Our feature-length documentary will delve into these questions and examine how nostalgia impacts this affected generation. What to expect: The film will include interviews with treasured teachers and coaches that had impact far beyond the school grounds. We will spend time with some of the amazing alumni that represent the community and South Carolina so well… like, music superstar Darius Rucker (Middleton) and Olympic gold medalist Katrina McClain (St. Andrew’s). Popular music has the ability to transport viewers to specific decades and states of mind. The doc will heavily feature music from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. AI technology will enable yearbook photographs to come to life. Animation will visualize schools growing, splitting, merging… and students running from one school to another.
